Storm Damage Cleanup Plan for Sunday, September 29th — RESIDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS PLEASE READ!!

For the safety and protection of the public, effective at dawn on 9/29/2019, the temporary permission to place trees, brush, and storm debris in the road right of way will expire. Items being removed must be placed on the property owners own property for disposal by that owner. Removal of the items from the right of way must be completed by 6:00pm Sunday evening.

The town brush disposal site at the park will remain open until at least Wednesday for free disposal of the storm related clean wood. The recycling center will be open every day at least through Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

The coordinated disaster relief operation will be finished on Sunday night, Sept. 29, 2019. After that time, all residents and volunteers will be operating as they see fit.

As the cleanup operation continues, the Town Board and the Wheaton Fire Station members will continue to monitor the situation and disseminate information as required.

We cannot express our thanks enough to all the thousands of people that have helped get us through this so far. Residents properties are now open enough to have room to work to complete cleanup within their property. That goal has been achieved.

The Wisconsin State DNR Forestry Division will continue assisting in the cleanup effort on Sunday, September 29th.  They have divided the affected areas into 3 zones.  Each zone has dedicated coordinators to make sure things keep moving forward.  The goal is to meet the needs of everybody (residents and volunteers) and tackle as much as possible.

Please remind people asking for assistance they can call 211.

PARKING/TRANSPORTATION

  • Designated vehicle parking areas are setup in Wheaton Park.  Please refer to the map below for parking areas.
  • Bus and shuttle van transportation from Wheaton Fire Station to the clean up locations will be provided again.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  THE ROADS TO THE DAMAGE ZONE WILL HAVE RESTRICTED ACCESS.  USING THE DESIGNATED PARKING AREAS WILL HELP KEEP OUR ROADS OPEN FOR LARGE EQUIPMENT HAULING DEBRIS TO AND FROM THE BRUSH SITE. WE DO NOT WANT TO CREATE TRAFFIC JAMS OR UNSAFE SITUATIONS FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS AND RESIDENTS.

VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN/OUT

  • Volunteers with dump trucks, large dump trailers, track skid-steers are encouraged to arrive at 8:30 am for check-in at Wheaton Fire Station.
  • All other volunteers must check-in at the Wheaton Fire Station – starting at 9AM – to receive their arm band.  Important: when you are done for the day, please check out!  This helps ensure all volunteers are accounted for.
  • To speed up the check-in process, please bring your drivers license.  If you forget it or don’t have one you will not be turned away.  You will just need to fill out a separate form.
  • Volunteer safety is our top priority. Wear closed toed shoes, bright colored clothing, and required PPE. Gloves are highly recommended.
  • Kids under 18 are able to volunteer but they will need an adult chaperone.

BRUSH SITE

  • The temporary brush site for clean wood will continue to operate with the Township loader assisting with unloading and piling.
  • On Sunday, September 29th the brush site will shutdown at 6PM.
  • PLEASE NOTE on the map above how we want vehicles/tractors with trailers and heavy equipment accessing the brush pile.
  • The town brush disposal site at the park will remain open Monday, September 30th thru Wednesday, October 2nd for free disposal of the storm related clean wood.

RECYCLING CENTER

  • The recycling center will be open for storm debris scattered in the surrounding area.  Recycling Center is located at 2429 20th Street Elk Mound.
  • The recycling center will be open every day next week at least through Saturday, October 5, 2019.

PERSONAL ITEMS FOUND

  • Any personal items found can be brought to the Wheaton Fire Station where a lost and found has been started.  Items will be cataloged and we will be posting updates to the Town of Wheaton website.  (This is still under construction)
  • If you are missing personal items, you may check the lost and found.

 SPECIAL CLEANUP PROJECT UPDATE

  • If you have pickup with dump box or dump trailer and want to help we can certainly use it as the chip pile is growing quicker than we can move chips to the park trails.

Thank you to everyone for all the help!!
